About the role

An assistant site engineer helps turn approved drawings into safe, accurate work on site. The interview focuses on everyday checks, records, quality concerns and hazards, with particular attention to when you should stop work and seek direction from the responsible engineer.

How to prepare

  1. Review the checks made before concrete, blockwork, excavation and reinforcement activities proceed.
  2. Practise reading drawing titles, revision marks, dimensions, grids and levels.
  3. Prepare a clear example of finding and reporting a quality or safety issue.
  4. Revise what belongs in a daily site diary and an inspection record.
  5. Think through how weather, access and delayed materials affect the next day's work.

Common mistakes

  • Continuing work from a drawing whose revision status is uncertain.
  • Correcting defective work without first recording and reporting what happened.
  • Leaving safety action entirely to the HSE team when there is an immediate danger.
  • Writing vague progress notes that omit locations, quantities, constraints and actions.
