About this interview
A pupillage interview tests whether you can think and speak like a developing barrister while remaining ethical and composed. The panel may challenge your reasoning, interrupt an advocacy exercise and examine why the Bar and that type of chambers suit you.
How to prepare
- Research the chambers' practice areas and prepare specific reasons for seeking pupillage there.
- Practise short submissions with a clear proposition, supporting authority and requested outcome.
- Review professional ethics and consider conflicts between a client's wishes and duties to the court.
- Prepare examples that show resilience, independent judgement and constructive use of feedback.
- Check the official professional body's current pupillage and conduct guidance where it applies.
Common mistakes
- Reciting a memorised speech without responding to the panel's intervention.
- Overstating an authority or inventing law when uncertain.
- Treating aggression as persuasive advocacy.
- Giving a generic reason for becoming a barrister.
