About this interview
A career change interview tests whether your move into a different role or field is informed and sustainable. The interviewer wants evidence that your past work offers relevant value, that you understand the new job and that you are actively closing genuine gaps. You may also be asked about changes in level, pay expectations or working style.
How to prepare
- Learn the target role's daily tasks, measures of success and common early challenges.
- Map three achievements from your previous career to specific needs in the new role.
- Identify the gaps an interviewer is likely to notice and prepare evidence of how you are closing them.
- Build a practical project or work sample that shows more than interest alone.
- Frame the move around what you are moving towards rather than complaints about your previous field.
Common mistakes
- Talking mainly about escaping your previous career.
- Assuming broad experience removes the need to learn entry-level fundamentals.
- Using vague claims about transferable skills without a result or example.
- Pretending the move involves no trade-offs or learning curve.
