About the role
A cashier takes payments in cash, card and bank transfer, gives the right change and balances the till at the end of each shift. The interviewer is deciding whether you are accurate, honest and calm when the queue is long, the network is slow and a customer insists a transfer has gone through.
How to prepare
- Practise quick mental sums and counting notes so you stay accurate under pressure.
- Know how you would confirm a bank transfer before releasing goods, rather than trusting a screenshot.
- Think of a time you found and corrected a mistake with money and be ready to describe it.
- Prepare a calm answer for how you would deal with a customer who becomes rude in a long queue.
- Learn the basic steps of a till reconciliation so you can explain them in your own words.
Common mistakes
- Saying you have never made a mistake, which sounds less believable than owning one you fixed.
- Not knowing how to spot a fake transfer alert, one of the most common risks at the till.
- Rushing through answers about cash shortages instead of showing you follow the procedure.
