About the role
This interview assesses the commercial and operational judgement needed to fix dry bulk cargoes or vessels. The panel will expect you to connect voyage economics with live market information, negotiate precisely and recognise charter-party terms that can turn an attractive rate into a poor result.
How to prepare
- Practise a voyage calculation covering sea time, port time, bunker consumption, port costs and commissions.
- Prepare a fixture negotiation where your rate or terms changed as new information emerged.
- Review the charter-party clauses that affect laytime, demurrage, cargo handling and voyage risk.
- Think through how you verify market reports on cargoes, tonnage and recent fixtures.
- Prepare to explain how you hand a concluded fixture to operations and claims colleagues.
Common mistakes
- Quoting freight without stating the bunker, time and port-cost assumptions behind it.
- Focusing only on the headline rate while overlooking material charter-party exposure.
- Repeating market rumours without explaining how you checked their reliability.
