About this interview
This interview is for volunteers who welcome people and help a church service run safely and smoothly. The panel looks for warmth, good judgement, reliable teamwork and a calm response to seating, access or emergency situations.
How to prepare
- Review the usual flow of arrival, seating, offerings, movement and departure for a service.
- Prepare examples of helping a visitor, calming a disagreement or responding to an unexpected problem.
- Think through how you would keep aisles and exits clear during a crowded gathering.
- Practise explaining how you would ask a team leader for help without causing alarm.
Common mistakes
- Treating ushering as seat allocation only and overlooking welcome and safety.
- Arguing with an attendee instead of offering options and seeking support.
- Sharing details of a sensitive incident with people who do not need to know.
