About the role
A compliance officer keeps the organisation within the rules set by its regulators. You write and update policies, monitor how they are followed, deal with regulators, report breaches and train staff. The panel wants to see that you know the rules, can work with the business and will escalate when needed.
How to prepare
- Know the main regulators for the sector and the key rules they enforce.
- Prepare an example of a compliance gap you found and how you got it closed.
- Think through how you train staff so policies are understood, not just signed.
- Be ready to explain how you handle pressure from a senior manager to bend a rule.
- Review recent regulatory sanctions in the sector and what caused them.
Common mistakes
- Positioning compliance as the department that says no to everything.
- Being vague about how you would escalate a serious breach.
- Listing regulations without explaining how you applied them in practice.
