About the role
This interview assesses consultant judgement before, during and after anaesthesia, especially when risk or resources are difficult. The panel also wants evidence that you can lead crises, communicate uncertainty and improve safety beyond your own operating list.
How to prepare
- Review structured responses to difficult airway, anaphylaxis and major haemodynamic instability.
- Prepare a high-risk perioperative case in which you changed or postponed the plan.
- Think through how you prioritise theatre work when staff, oxygen or equipment are constrained.
- Prepare an incident or near miss that changed a departmental process.
- Check the official professional body for current specialist registration and practising requirements.
Common mistakes
- Naming drugs or equipment without explaining priorities and backup plans.
- Proceeding with an unsafe list simply because a surgeon says the case is urgent.
- Treating a near miss as an individual error without examining the system.
