About the audition
This audition assesses how you use your voice as a contemporary solo performer, not simply how loudly or elaborately you can sing. The panel listens for reliable technique, an individual interpretation, confident communication and the ability to apply a musical note quickly.
How to prepare
- Choose contrasting songs that sit well in your current range and meet the audition brief.
- Mark breaths, difficult transitions and the emotional shifts in each lyric.
- Rehearse with the same backing track, accompanist cues or instrumental arrangement you will use on the day.
- Practise restarting from the verse or chorus so an unexpected request does not unsettle you.
- Record a rehearsal and check pitch, diction, pacing and whether your movement supports the song.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a song for its biggest note rather than for its fit with your voice.
- Copying the original recording so closely that your own interpretation disappears.
- Adding runs that blur the melody or words.
- Ignoring a direction because you are fixed on a rehearsed version.
