About the role
This interview tests the accounting behind what an FMCG product costs to make and why actual results differ from plan. The panel wants solid fundamentals, careful spreadsheet work and the curiosity to connect financial variances with events on the production floor.
How to prepare
- Revise direct materials, direct labour, overhead allocation, standard costing and inventory movements.
- Practise breaking material variances into price and usage questions using simple examples.
- Prepare a spreadsheet example where you checked formulas, totals and source data.
- Think through how waste, downtime, yield and production volume can affect unit cost.
- Practise explaining a cost variance in plain language to a non-finance colleague.
Common mistakes
- Reciting formulas without explaining what operational event could drive the result.
- Using an unexplained plug figure to force two records to agree.
- Treating every adverse variance as poor performance before checking volume, price and timing.
