About this interview
This practice covers the private meeting in which you resign and a manager responds with questions or a counteroffer. The aim is to communicate a firm decision respectfully, assess any proposed change against your real reasons for leaving and agree a sensible transition. It is a professional conversation, not an opportunity to settle every workplace grievance.
How to prepare
- Decide whether your resignation is final or whether you would genuinely consider a counteroffer.
- Write two or three professional reasons you can state without attacking individuals.
- Set criteria for judging a counteroffer, including whether it addresses the underlying reason for leaving.
- Review your notice arrangements and workplace policy before proposing a final day.
- Outline current work, key contacts and the decisions a successor will need to understand.
Common mistakes
- Starting with a long complaint before clearly stating the resignation.
- Accepting or rejecting a counteroffer in the room without considering the underlying issues.
- Sharing confidential details about a future employer or offer under pressure.
- Promising an unrealistic handover or continued availability after leaving.
- Using the conversation to threaten, blame or embarrass colleagues.
