About the role
A credit analyst decides whether a borrower can repay and on what terms. You read financial statements, study cash flows, assess collateral and write credit papers for approval, then watch the loan book for early warning signs. The panel is testing your analysis and your judgement on risk.
How to prepare
- Practise spreading a set of financial statements and working out the key ratios by hand.
- Prepare a credit you assessed, the main risks you found and how you structured around them.
- Be clear why cash flow matters more than collateral when judging repayment.
- Think through how high interest rates and FX pressure affect borrowers in different sectors.
- Know the warning signs that a performing loan is starting to go bad.
Common mistakes
- Recommending approval because the borrower looks impressive rather than because the numbers support it.
- Treating collateral as the main source of repayment.
- Ignoring the industry and economic conditions around the borrower.
