About the role
This interview covers the evidence, judgement and integrity required to clear goods through customs. The panel wants to know that you can prepare accurate declarations, investigate a hold and communicate uncertainty without taking an improper shortcut.
How to prepare
- Review how you check invoices, packing lists, transport documents and supporting permits before declaration.
- Prepare a case where customs requested clarification, inspection or additional evidence and explain the resolution.
- Practise explaining how you research an unfamiliar product classification without guessing.
- Check the official customs authority for the current rules, procedures and documentary requirements relevant to the role.
- Think through how you would respond to pressure to misstate value, quantity, origin or description.
Common mistakes
- Guessing a classification from the product name without obtaining enough technical information.
- Promising release before customs actions and required evidence are complete.
- Describing unofficial payments or false declarations as normal ways to speed clearance.
- Failing to keep the evidence and decisions that support a declaration.
