About the role

A humanitarian data collection assistant gathers information from people who may be facing displacement, loss or insecurity. The panel is checking whether you can obtain consent, ask neutral questions, capture answers accurately and protect both respondents and data during fieldwork.

How to prepare

  1. Practise giving a short, plain explanation of voluntary participation and confidentiality.
  2. Review how to ask survey questions without suggesting an answer.
  3. Prepare an example of staying organised during fieldwork or another mobile task.
  4. Think through backup steps for a flat battery, failed network or inaccessible location.
  5. Be ready to explain when you would stop an interview and contact a supervisor.

Common mistakes

  • Promising that participation will lead to aid or selection for a programme.
  • Changing an unusual answer because it does not match your expectation.
  • Discussing identifiable responses with community leaders or other respondents.
