About the role
A data scientist uses statistics and machine learning to predict outcomes and test ideas, such as which customers will default, churn or respond to an offer. The work moves between cleaning data, building and validating models, designing experiments and explaining results to decision makers. The panel is deciding whether your methods are sound and whether your work changes real decisions.
How to prepare
- Prepare one project end to end: the business question, the data, the model you chose, how you validated it and the outcome.
- Revise core statistics such as hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, bias and overfitting.
- Be ready to explain how you would design an experiment and what would make its results untrustworthy.
- Practise explaining a model's output and its limits to a non-technical manager.
- Think about fairness and data quality in local datasets, such as thin credit histories or missing records.
Common mistakes
- Reaching for a complex model before trying a simple baseline.
- Quoting accuracy without discussing what the errors cost the business.
- Losing the panel in technical detail and never landing the business point.
