About this interview
A doctoral research proposal defence tests whether a planned study asks an important, answerable question and uses a rigorous design. The panel also looks for a clear contribution, responsible research practice and evidence that you can adapt the project without losing its purpose.
How to prepare
- Reduce the problem, gap and intended contribution to a short explanation that uses no unnecessary jargon.
- Trace every method choice back to a research question and compare it with at least one alternative.
- Check that your sampling, instruments and analysis plan fit together.
- List ethical, access and data management risks with a practical response to each one.
- Practise answering objections by stating what you accept, what you dispute and what you would change.
Common mistakes
- Describing a broad topic instead of a bounded research problem.
- Claiming originality without locating the study in existing scholarship.
- Listing methods without explaining how they answer the questions.
- Treating ethics approval as paperwork rather than part of the research design.
