About the role
An economic advisory consultant uses theory, data and judgement to answer policy and commercial questions. The interview tests whether you can frame a causal question, work carefully with imperfect evidence, build transparent scenarios and give decision-makers a useful conclusion without overstating certainty.
How to prepare
- Review an economic project and identify the question, counterfactual, data, method, limitations and decision it informed.
- Practise distinguishing a forecast, a scenario and a sensitivity analysis in plain language.
- Prepare examples of checking data sources, definitions, revisions and comparability.
- Think through how a policy or market change affects different groups through incentives and second-order effects.
- Practise summarising a technical result in three sentences for a non-specialist reader.
Common mistakes
- Claiming causation from a simple trend or correlation without a credible comparison.
- Hiding weak data or model limitations because the client wants a precise number.
- Delivering technical results without stating the decision, trade-off or practical implication.
