About the role

An editorial assistant helps move written work from submission to publication. The panel is looking for careful proofreading, sound fact checking, reliable organisation and tact when communicating changes to writers and editors.

How to prepare

  1. Practise marking up a short article for grammar, structure, consistency and unsupported claims.
  2. Review how you verify names, quotations, dates and links using reliable sources.
  3. Prepare an example of managing several small deadlines without losing track of details.
  4. Read recent work from the type of publication and notice its tone, headings and house style.
  5. Think through how you would explain a necessary correction to a protective writer.

Common mistakes

  • Correcting grammar while overlooking a doubtful fact or missing source.
  • Rewriting an author's voice when a lighter edit would solve the problem.
  • Claiming attention to detail without giving a clear example.
