About the role

An engine cadet supports machinery rounds, maintenance and engine-room housekeeping while learning under qualified engineers. The panel wants safe judgement, a working grasp of mechanical systems, careful observation and an honest approach when a task is unfamiliar.

How to prepare

  1. Revise the basic purpose of propulsion, cooling, lubrication, fuel, bilge and compressed-air systems.
  2. Practise explaining how you would isolate, depressurise and verify equipment before maintenance under supervision.
  3. Review the readings commonly checked during machinery rounds and what a changing trend could mean.
  4. Prepare an example of diagnosing a practical mechanical problem using observations rather than assumptions.
  5. Check the official maritime authority or training body for current certification and sea-time rules that apply to you.

Common mistakes

  • Jumping to a repair before isolating the equipment and confirming the hazard controls.
  • Listing machinery parts without explaining what the system does.
  • Hiding uncertainty instead of asking the supervising engineer for guidance.
