About the role
This interview tests whether you can teach reading, grammar, speaking and writing as connected skills at secondary level. The panel is looking for secure subject knowledge, lessons that make pupils think, useful marking and a balanced approach to exam preparation.
How to prepare
- Rehearse how you would model the analysis of a short prose or poetry extract.
- Prepare an example of feedback that helped a pupil improve a piece of writing.
- Review common difficulties in comprehension, grammar and extended writing.
- Check the official exam body for the current syllabus and assessment format.
- Think through how you include reluctant readers and pupils learning in an additional language.
Common mistakes
- Treating English as a list of rules instead of showing how pupils use language for meaning.
- Focusing entirely on past questions and neglecting reading and writing development.
- Describing marks without explaining the feedback or reteaching that followed.
