About the role
An equity research intern studies listed companies, updates forecasts and helps turn financial and industry evidence into investment views. The panel wants structured curiosity, sound accounting and valuation basics, careful sourcing and the confidence to challenge an attractive story when the evidence is weak.
How to prepare
- Select a listed company and understand its products, revenue drivers, costs, competitors and major risks.
- Revise earnings quality, cash conversion and the effect of one-off items.
- Practise a simple comparable valuation and test how changing assumptions affects the result.
- Read a set of company results and write a concise update on what changed.
- Prepare to explain what evidence would invalidate your investment view.
Common mistakes
- Repeating management's narrative without testing it against the financial statements.
- Giving a target value with no explanation of its assumptions or sensitivity.
- Writing only the positive case and omitting evidence that could prove the view wrong.
