About the role
This interview covers the engineering choices behind a fibre link, not only the physical splice. The panel wants you to calculate losses, read test evidence, consider route risks and leave accurate information that makes later maintenance and fault restoration faster.
How to prepare
- Revise attenuation, insertion loss, return loss and the purpose of an optical power meter and reflectometer.
- Practise adding fibre, connector, splice and splitter losses with an engineering margin.
- Review common causes of high loss, reflection, bending damage and intermittent faults.
- Think through route risks such as excavation, flooding, sharp bends and difficult access.
- Prepare to explain the acceptance checks for a newly installed fibre span.
Common mistakes
- Calculating only cable attenuation and forgetting joints, connectors, splitters and margin.
- Reading distance from a test trace without interpreting the event type and loss.
- Choosing the shortest route while ignoring access and damage risk.
- Treating route and test records as optional after installation.
