About the role
A financial analyst builds models, budgets and forecasts, explains why actual results differ from plan and helps managers make decisions with numbers. Expect to talk through your modelling approach and the assumptions behind it. The panel is deciding whether your analysis holds up and whether you can explain it clearly.
How to prepare
- Practise building a simple three statement model from scratch so the links are second nature.
- Prepare one variance you analysed, what drove it and what the business did as a result.
- Think through how inflation and naira movements affect a forecast and how you build them in.
- Be ready to defend your assumptions and say what would change your view.
- Read the company's latest published results if they are available and note the main drivers.
Common mistakes
- Getting lost in spreadsheet detail and never reaching the point the manager needs.
- Presenting a forecast without stating the assumptions it rests on.
- Treating the model as the answer instead of a tool to support a business decision.
