About the role
A football referee applies the laws, manages conduct and works with other officials to keep a match fair and safe. The panel will test how you read incidents, position yourself, communicate under pressure and account for difficult decisions after the match.
How to prepare
- Review the current laws and competition guidance on the official governing body's website.
- Practise explaining decisions by identifying what you saw and which consideration mattered.
- Prepare examples of calming disagreement while keeping firm control of an activity.
- Review positioning for transitions, penalty-area incidents and set pieces.
- Check the official governing body's current requirements for referee accreditation and fitness.
Common mistakes
- Giving a decision without explaining the observation and law behind it.
- Trying to win an argument with a player instead of using calm match control.
- Depending on proximity alone rather than describing a clear viewing angle.
- Writing emotional or speculative language in an incident report.
