About the role
This interview tests whether you can lead a football programme, build a clear playing identity and make sound decisions under match pressure. The panel will look for evidence that you develop players, manage staff and difficult personalities, and communicate honestly with club leadership.
How to prepare
- Define your preferred playing principles and how you adapt them to different squads and opponents.
- Prepare examples of improving a player, changing a match and restoring standards after poor results.
- Review how you plan a training week around fixtures, recovery, tactical work and player availability.
- Practise explaining selection and substitution decisions without blaming players or support staff.
- Consider how you would use academy players while meeting the first team's performance expectations.
Common mistakes
- Describing one formation as a complete football philosophy.
- Claiming every success while blaming players, officials or executives for setbacks.
- Giving tactical answers without explaining the cues that would trigger a change.
