About the role
This interview examines how you prevent healthcare-associated infection and respond when surveillance suggests a problem. The panel will expect sound transmission-based reasoning, careful use of data, practical audits and the ability to influence staff without losing sight of immediate patient and worker safety.
How to prepare
- Review standard precautions and how additional precautions change with the route of transmission.
- Practise describing an outbreak investigation from case definition and line listing to control and review.
- Prepare an example of an audit that led to a sustained change in clinical practice.
- Think through safe alternatives when isolation space, protective equipment or water is temporarily limited.
- Refresh how you distinguish a real surveillance signal from changes in testing, reporting or case mix.
Common mistakes
- Naming a precaution without linking it to the likely route of transmission.
- Assuming a rise in reported infections proves an outbreak before validating the data.
- Blaming individual staff without examining workload, supplies, layout and supervision.
- Delivering training without checking whether behaviour changed in practice.
