About the award
An inter-school debate final tests both the quality of a team's case and its ability to respond to opponents in the room. Adjudicators look for a fair interpretation of the motion, sound evidence, connected team speeches, direct rebuttal and controlled delivery under time limits.
How to prepare
- Define the important words in the motion and agree on the central issue your side must prove.
- Build each argument as a clear claim, reason, evidence and link back to the motion.
- Research the likely opposing case and prepare responses to its strongest version.
- Rehearse handovers so each speaker extends the team case without repeating it.
- Practise cutting a less important example while preserving the core reasoning when time is short.
Common mistakes
- Redefining the motion so narrowly that the opposing side has no fair case.
- Listing facts without explaining how they support the argument.
- Attacking a weaker version of the opposing case instead of its central reasoning.
- Using all available time on prepared material and leaving no space for rebuttal.
