About the role
This interview covers the scientific and operational judgement needed to run an analytical chemistry laboratory. The panel wants a manager who can protect result integrity, keep instruments and materials available, control chemical risks and lead analysts through workload pressure without weakening procedure.
How to prepare
- Review an analytical method problem you investigated and the evidence used to confirm the cause.
- Prepare an example of balancing calibration, maintenance and sample priorities when capacity was tight.
- Revise how you control standards, reagents, calculations, records and instrument access.
- Think through your response to an undocumented repeat test or unauthorised data change.
- Prepare an example of coaching an analyst whose technique or documentation needed improvement.
Common mistakes
- Focusing on throughput while ignoring calibration status, traceability or analyst workload.
- Repeating tests until a preferred result appears.
- Giving generic safety answers without connecting hazards to practical controls.
- Solving every technical issue personally instead of building consistent judgement across the team.
