About the role
This interview tests how you control health, safety and environmental risks around vessels, berths and marine work. The panel is looking for sound judgement, command of permit systems and evidence that you can investigate incidents without stopping at blame. Strong answers connect procedures to what you would inspect, communicate and record on site.
How to prepare
- Revise risk controls for mooring, cargo transfer, bunkering, lifting and enclosed-space entry.
- Prepare an incident example that shows how you gathered evidence and tracked corrective actions.
- Practise explaining when you would stop work and what must change before a safe restart.
- Review pollution prevention, spill response and waste-handling procedures relevant to marine operations.
- Check the relevant official maritime bodies for current certification and safety requirements.
Common mistakes
- Quoting procedures without explaining how you verify controls at the worksite.
- Treating minor incidents as unimportant or blaming an individual before investigating the system.
- Forgetting the environmental consequences of a marine emergency.
- Allowing schedule pressure to weaken permit or isolation checks.
