About the role
A materials planner ensures components and packaging are available for production when needed, without building avoidable inventory. The interviewer will test how you use production schedules, bills of materials, lead times and stock records, and how you respond when suppliers or planning data create a shortage.
How to prepare
- Review how demand, bills of materials, stock, open orders, lead times and lot sizes interact in material planning.
- Prepare a shortage example showing how you assessed production impact and coordinated recovery.
- Think of a planning parameter or master data problem you identified and corrected.
- Be ready to explain how you prioritise materials by criticality, lead time, value and supply risk.
- Review the ERP transactions or reports you use to monitor exceptions and supplier commitments.
Common mistakes
- Treating every system proposal as correct without checking demand, stock status and planning parameters.
- Expediting all shortages equally instead of protecting the most critical production requirements.
- Focusing only on availability and ignoring excess stock, shelf life and supplier constraints.
