About the role
A mortgage underwriter decides whether a long-term property loan is affordable, properly secured and within policy. The panel will look for careful income verification, awareness of title and valuation risks, consistent exception judgement and a clear audit trail for every decision.
How to prepare
- Revise how stable income, existing commitments and living costs affect repayment capacity.
- Prepare a case where documents or account activity led you to investigate further.
- Review common property valuation, title and insurance concerns that can stop completion.
- Think through how to present a policy exception and the compensating factors required.
- Practise explaining a decline decision in precise, respectful language.
Common mistakes
- Treating the property value as enough protection when affordability is weak.
- Including unstable or unexplained income without suitable evidence.
- Approving an exception because the applicant appears low risk without documenting the rationale.
