About the audition
A music or choir audition interview helps a director learn about your musical background before or alongside your performance. They look at your voice or instrument, whether you read music, how you work in an ensemble and whether you can commit to regular rehearsals.
How to prepare
- Know your voice type or instrument level and the styles you are most comfortable in.
- Be honest about how well you read music and what you are doing to improve.
- Prepare an example of working in a group, such as a band, choir or school ensemble.
- Check the rehearsal schedule and plan how you will get there, even in heavy traffic.
Common mistakes
- Claiming to sight-read well and then struggling when tested.
- Focusing only on solo work when the group needs team players.
- Being vague about your rehearsal commitment.
