About this interview
This promotion interview assesses whether an experienced nurse is ready to lead a ward as well as deliver safe care. The panel is looking for calm clinical leadership, fair staff management, reliable ward organisation and a practical approach to patient concerns and service improvement.
How to prepare
- Review examples where you coordinated a shift, escalated a clinical risk or supported a colleague.
- Practise explaining how you would allocate staff according to patient acuity and competence.
- Prepare a clear example of addressing poor practice while maintaining a respectful working relationship.
- Revise local procedures for medicines, incidents, infection prevention and patient confidentiality.
- Choose an audit or improvement activity and be ready to explain the evidence, action and result.
Common mistakes
- Focusing on clinical skill while overlooking staffing, delegation and follow-up.
- Treating every performance concern as a disciplinary matter.
- Promising perfect outcomes without explaining how risk would be monitored.
- Sharing identifiable patient or staff information in an example.
