About the role
This interview focuses on practical support for young children during play, group activities and daily care routines. The panel is looking for warmth and patience, but also close supervision, factual observation and a clear understanding of safeguarding boundaries.
How to prepare
- Plan one simple play activity and identify the language, movement or number skills it develops.
- Review safe supervision during transitions, meals, rest and outdoor play.
- Prepare an example of helping a young child manage a strong emotion.
- Practise writing an objective observation that separates what happened from your interpretation.
- Think through how you would share a concern with the nursery teacher.
Common mistakes
- Describing play as a break rather than a planned way to learn.
- Leaving out supervision when discussing care routines.
- Diagnosing a developmental condition from a single observation.
- Discussing one child's progress with another family.
