About the role

A patient services officer runs the front desk of a hospital or clinic: registering patients, booking appointments, handling billing queries and keeping records straight. Patients are often worried or unwell, so calm and kindness matter. The panel is checking accuracy, patience and service.

How to prepare

  1. Prepare an example of calming an upset customer or patient.
  2. Think through how you keep a long queue moving without making anyone feel ignored.
  3. Be ready to explain billing and payment basics, including how insurance schemes work at the desk.
  4. Know how you keep patient information confidential at a busy counter.
  5. Practise a warm greeting and a clear explanation of what happens next.

Common mistakes

  • Treating the queue as an annoyance instead of people who need help.
  • Discussing a patient's details where others can hear.
  • Having no example of handling a billing dispute calmly.
