About the role
A payroll officer makes sure everyone is paid correctly and on time each month. You process the payroll, calculate PAYE, pension and other statutory deductions, remit them to the right bodies and answer staff pay queries. The panel is checking accuracy, controls and discretion.
How to prepare
- Walk through your monthly payroll process from inputs to bank upload.
- Refresh how PAYE, pension, housing fund and other deductions are calculated and remitted.
- Prepare an example of a payroll error you caught and how you fixed it.
- Be ready to explain the controls that stop ghost workers and unauthorised changes.
- Think through how you handle an angry employee who says their pay is wrong.
Common mistakes
- Being unsure about statutory deduction rules and remittance deadlines.
- Treating confidential pay information casually.
- Having no clear checks before the payroll is approved.
