About the programme
A PhD admission interview helps a department decide whether you can carry out several years of independent research. The panel looks closely at your research proposal, your past research experience, how well your work fits the department and supervisors, and how clearly you explain complex ideas.
How to prepare
- Know your research proposal inside out, including its question, methods and limits.
- Read the recent work of your likely supervisors and know how your project connects to it.
- Prepare to explain your past research, what went wrong and what you learnt.
- Practise explaining your project in plain words for someone outside your field.
- Think about what you will need to do the research, such as data, equipment or fieldwork access.
Common mistakes
- Having a proposal that is too broad to finish in the time available.
- Getting defensive when the panel challenges your methods.
- Not knowing the work of the people you hope will supervise you.
