About the role
This interview tests senior legal judgement inside a public institution, where authority, procedure, procurement and record keeping matter as much as the immediate outcome. The panel wants advice that is independent, practical and clear, together with evidence that you can supervise work and manage institutional risk.
How to prepare
- Review how statutory authority, fair procedure, delegated powers and record keeping affect public decisions.
- Prepare examples of reviewing a procurement, contract, policy or regulatory action before approval.
- Practise structuring a short legal opinion around authority, options, risks and a recommended action.
- Choose a dispute where you identified and corrected an underlying institutional problem.
- Check the official public service and procurement rules currently relevant to the recruiting institution.
- Prepare an example of maintaining professional independence under pressure.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a desirable policy outcome is lawful without identifying the source of authority.
- Giving abstract advice that does not tell the decision-maker what to do next.
- Ignoring procurement history, approvals or the written record when reviewing a contract.
- Suggesting that senior pressure justifies changing an independent legal conclusion.
