About the role
A process safety engineer helps prevent fires, explosions and harmful releases by understanding how loss of containment can occur. The panel is looking for disciplined hazard analysis, sound judgement about safeguards, control of plant changes and lessons that improve the system rather than blame individuals.
How to prepare
- Revise how you identify causes, consequences, safeguards and recommendations during a hazard study.
- Prepare an example of challenging a safeguard that was not sufficiently independent or reliable.
- Review how temporary and permanent plant changes should be assessed before implementation.
- Practise explaining a process safety event from initiating cause to final consequence.
- Think through the checks required before bringing modified equipment into service.
Common mistakes
- Confusing personal safety observations with control of major accident hazards.
- Listing safeguards without testing their independence, availability or likely failure modes.
- Treating management of change as an approval signature instead of a technical risk process.
