About the role
A construction procurement assistant helps the project obtain the correct materials at the required time and on agreed terms. The interviewer is looking for accurate comparisons, respect for approvals, useful supplier follow-up and an understanding that the cheapest quote is not always the best purchase.
How to prepare
- Practise building a quotation comparison that includes more than unit price.
- Review the route from site requisition through approval, purchase order, delivery and invoice matching.
- Learn the basic descriptions and units used for common construction materials.
- Prepare an example of following up a delayed item without losing track of commitments.
- Revise spreadsheet functions you can use to compare totals and organise supplier data.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a supplier on price alone without checking specification and delivery terms.
- Placing an order before the correct request and approval are documented.
- Waiting until a promised delivery date has passed before warning the site team.
