About the role
This interview covers leadership of several public works projects from planning through handover. The panel is looking for engineering judgement, robust contract and cost control, honest progress reporting and practical engagement with communities affected by construction.
How to prepare
- Prepare an example of recovering a delayed or poorly coordinated infrastructure programme.
- Review how you assess variations, contractor claims, valuations and extensions of time.
- Think through quality assurance when site records conflict with physical evidence.
- Prepare an example of managing access, utilities or community disruption during works.
- Check the relevant official bodies for current procurement, engineering and safety requirements.
Common mistakes
- Describing schedules without recognising design, approval and procurement dependencies.
- Accepting contractor reports without site evidence and traceable records.
- Approving variations before establishing entitlement, price and programme effect.
- Treating public consultation as an announcement after decisions are fixed.
