About the role

A rail operations controller manages train movements and coordinates the response when normal running is disrupted. The panel is looking for disciplined safety decisions, a reliable picture of the network and calm communication with drivers, stations and technical teams. Strong answers explain priorities in order and show how every critical instruction is confirmed and recorded.

How to prepare

  1. Review how you protect train movements before investigating an uncertain fault.
  2. Prepare examples of regulating a busy service and handling competing operational priorities.
  3. Practise giving short radio instructions and requesting a clear repeat-back.
  4. Revise the structure of an incident log, including decisions, times, contacts and handovers.
  5. Think through how maintenance overruns, equipment failures and unavailable platforms affect the wider service.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to recover punctuality before the affected movements are protected.
  • Giving instructions without confirming that the receiver understood them.
  • Focusing on one train while missing conflicts elsewhere on the network.
  • Describing an incident without explaining your own decisions and records.
