About the role
This interview tests whether you can keep a power system SCADA environment observable, controllable and secure. The panel will look for structured fault finding, careful point integration and calm coordination with operators and field engineers when equipment is live.
How to prepare
- Review the data path from field instrument and protection relay through the RTU or gateway to the control centre.
- Prepare an example of diagnosing stale data, failed control or poor communications using logs and event records.
- Revise point naming, scaling, quality flags, time synchronisation and end-to-end acceptance testing.
- Think through secure vendor access, backups, change control and recovery for operational technology.
- Practise explaining a technical fault to a control room operator without hiding the operational impact.
Common mistakes
- Treating every loss of visibility as a server fault before checking the full signal path.
- Discussing remote access without authentication, approval, monitoring or a defined end time.
- Changing live points without rollback, testing or control room coordination.
- Using protocol names without explaining how you would verify data quality and control behaviour.
