About the role
This interview tests whether you can take a safe navigational watch and support the master with reliable passage planning and records. The panel will look for practical judgement, disciplined use of bridge procedures and clear communication when traffic, weather or equipment creates uncertainty.
How to prepare
- Revise the steps for appraisal, planning, execution and monitoring of a berth-to-berth passage.
- Prepare examples of close-quarters decisions, poor visibility and equipment defects you handled safely.
- Review how you correct charts and publications and record navigational checks.
- Practise explaining when you would call the master and how you would challenge an unsafe instruction.
- Check the official issuing body for the current rules affecting your licence and certificates.
Common mistakes
- Reciting collision rules without explaining the observations and decisions you would make.
- Treating the pilot or electronic navigation system as a substitute for your own watchkeeping judgement.
- Giving vague answers about chart corrections, log entries or calling the master.
