About the role
This is a senior disputes interview covering strategy, written advocacy, evidence, procedure and settlement. The panel wants to see that you can take ownership of a difficult matter, give a candid view of prospects and direct a team without losing control of detail.
How to prepare
- Prepare two disputes where your analysis changed the case strategy or settlement position.
- Review how you assess jurisdiction, limitation, interim relief, evidence and enforcement at the start of a matter.
- Practise stating a case theory and its main weakness in plain language.
- Choose an example of cross-examining evidence or resolving a serious factual inconsistency.
- Prepare to explain how you estimate costs, report progress and manage a client's expectations.
Common mistakes
- Treating every dispute as a contest that must reach judgment.
- Giving confident views on prospects without identifying evidential or procedural weaknesses.
- Describing courtroom work vaguely instead of explaining your own decisions and contribution.
- Revealing confidential facts from a previous client's case.
