About the role
This interview examines how you turn broad legal questions into defensible research and concise written analysis. The panel is looking for disciplined source evaluation, intellectual honesty about uncertainty and the ability to raise the standard of a research team.
How to prepare
- Select research projects that show doctrinal, comparative or policy analysis and be ready to explain your method.
- Practise tracing an important proposition back to primary authority and checking whether it remains current.
- Prepare an example where you narrowed or reframed a question after reviewing the available sources.
- Review how you record searches, citations, assumptions and quality checks so another researcher can reproduce the work.
- Think of feedback you gave that materially improved another researcher's analysis.
Common mistakes
- Describing databases and search terms without explaining how you evaluated authority.
- Presenting uncertainty or conflicting decisions as if the answer were settled.
- Producing an exhaustive literature summary with no clear conclusion for the reader.
- Editing junior work silently instead of setting standards and giving useful feedback.
