About the role
This interview tests whether you can design, review and commission protection and control schemes for substations and power networks. The panel will look for disciplined fault analysis, strong relay coordination and evidence that you protect people and equipment when operational pressure is high.
How to prepare
- Review differential, distance, overcurrent, earth fault and breaker failure protection principles and their common application limits.
- Practise explaining a coordination study from fault levels and CT ratios through to time and current settings.
- Prepare an example where oscillography, event records or SCADA data changed your diagnosis of a trip.
- Revise commissioning controls for CT circuits, trip circuits, interlocks, communications and settings files.
- Think through how you approve, version and communicate a protection settings change on an energised network.
Common mistakes
- Listing relay functions without explaining selectivity, sensitivity, speed and dependability.
- Treating a successful secondary injection as proof that the complete trip path works.
- Changing settings before confirming system conditions, CT data and the approved coordination basis.
- Ignoring configuration control and the operational consequences of an incorrect settings file.
