About the role
A site reliability engineer keeps busy services up, fast and predictable, using engineering rather than heroics. At senior level you set service level objectives, build monitoring that catches real problems, lead incident response and plan capacity before traffic arrives. The panel wants to know that you stay calm under pressure, make sound calls with partial information and leave systems better than you found them.
How to prepare
- Prepare two incident stories you led, with the timeline, the decisions you made under pressure and the follow-up work.
- Be ready to explain how you would choose service level objectives and error budgets for a service you know well.
- Revise capacity planning: how you forecast load, test limits and decide when to scale or optimise.
- Think about how you run blameless reviews and make sure the action items actually get done after an outage.
- Practise describing an observability setup in plain terms: what you measure, what you alert on and why.
Common mistakes
- Telling incident stories where you are the lone hero rather than the person who coordinated a team.
- Alerting on everything and treating more dashboards as better reliability.
- Skipping the follow-through, as if the incident ended the moment the service came back.
