About the audition
A spoken word audition considers both the writing and the live interpretation of a piece. The panel looks for original language, clear vocal choices, an honest connection with the audience and enough flexibility to meet the event's timing and content needs.
How to prepare
- Edit the piece so each image and transition contributes to its central idea.
- Mark changes in pace, emphasis and silence on a working copy of the text.
- Practise the piece to the stated time limit without flattening important moments.
- Prepare a shorter version in case the running order changes.
- Consider how the subject matter will meet the audience and content guidance for the event.
Common mistakes
- Relying on volume alone to create emotional force.
- Using dense imagery that makes the main idea hard to follow on first hearing.
- Ignoring the time limit or the event's stated content guidance.
- Treating a direction note as criticism of the writing.
