About the award
A sports scholarship interview helps a school or programme choose athletes who will perform in their sport and keep up with their studies. The panel looks at your sporting record, your training discipline, how you balance sport with schoolwork, how you behave as a teammate and competitor, and your plans for the future.
How to prepare
- List your main results, teams and competitions with dates so you can recall them quickly.
- Describe your weekly training routine and how you fit study around it.
- Think of a time you lost or were dropped and how you responded, as panels care about attitude.
- Have academic goals ready alongside sporting ones, so you do not come across as sport only.
- Ask your coach what they would say about you and be ready to speak to it.
Common mistakes
- Talking about talent and ignoring the hard work and discipline behind it.
- Having no answer on how you will keep your grades up during the season.
- Speaking badly about former coaches, teammates or officials.
